Rwandan Patriotic Front

The Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), known in French as the Front Patriotique Rwandais, is a political party in Rwanda that has been the dominant force in the country's politics since the early 1990s. Its origins trace back to the early 1980s among Rwandan exiles, primarily Tutsis, who had fled ethnic violence and discrimination in Rwanda during the preceding decades. The RPF launched a military campaign in 1990 from Uganda, where many of its members had found refuge and some had even served in the Ugandan army. The RPF's armed struggle culminated in its taking control of the country in July 1994, effectively ending the genocide against the Tutsi, during which extremist Hutu forces and militias killed an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. Under the leadership of Paul Kagame, who has been president since 2000, the RPF has focused on national reconciliation, economic development, and security. The party promotes a narrative of unity and reconciliation, emphasizing a Rwandan identity over ethnic affiliations. It has implemented policies aimed at preventing hate speech and divisionism, which are seen as instrumental in creating the conditions that led to the genocide.

Elections have consistently kept the RPF in power, but international observers and opposition groups have often questioned their fairness and transparency. The RPF justifies its approach by emphasizing the need for stability and national unity, arguing that too much political liberalization could reignite ethnic tensions.
