Journalist Mark Halperin is reporting that Kamala Harris will pick Josh Shapiro for VP.Ms. Harris and Mr. Shapiro, 51, have also known each other for years. In 2006, Ms. Harris, then the San Francisco district attorney, and Mr. Shapiro, a state representative from the Philadelphia suburbs, were tapped for a prestigious program for rising stars in American politics.Ten years later, Ms. Harris was in her last year as attorney general and running for Senate, while Mr. Shapiro was seeking the attorney general’s office in Pennsylvania.He built a broad coalition in that race, securing support from President Barack Obama and key law enforcement leaders. He had also stayed in touch with Ms. Harris, asking her for advice over the years, and he spoke with her during that run for attorney general, said Manuel Bonder, a spokesman for Mr. Shapiro.Mr. Shapiro won that fall even as Hillary Clinton lost the state, outperforming her in rural counties and running up his margins in the suburbs, in a preview of how he would win the governor’s race six years later — and, his supporters argue, how he could help Ms. Harris carry the battleground state this year.

A Ukrainian F-16 jet fighter was destroyed in a crash Monday, just weeks after the first of the American-made aircraft arrived in Ukraine, according to U.S. and Ukrainian officials.Initial reports indicate the jet wasn’t shot down by enemy fire, although the incident occurred during a massive Russian missile barrage across the country Monday, U.S. officials said.The General Staff of Ukraine’s armed forces said contact had been lost with the jet while it was approaching its next target.Ukraine used the jets for the first time in combat to shoot down Russian missiles during the strikes this week, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Pentagon referred questions to the Ukrainian Air Force for comment. The Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement that a pilot, Oleksiy Mes, was killed in combat while helping repel the missile attack on Monday.

Uniformed police officers and officials in plainclothes shooed away bystanders and warned them not to take photos. At hospitals where patients were taken after the attack — at least 43 more people were injured — local officials sat outside the intensive care units, blocking journalists from speaking with family members.On the Chinese internet, censors were mobilized to delete videos, news articles and commentaries about the attack. Almost 24 hours had passed before officials divulged details about the assault, which happened on Monday, including the death toll. On June 26, 2015 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the denial of marriage licenses violated the Due Process and the Equal Protection clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. The ruling made same sex marriage legal in all 50 U.S. States.
